Ryousangata is a Japanese term referring to fast fashion trends that are currently so popular to the degree that everyone looks the same. As it is based on current trends, what is considered Ryousangata keeps on changing and does not refer to a specific type of fashion.[1]
The Name[]
Ryousangata (量産型) means "mass-production type" and is used to describe mainstream fashion trends that a high portion of the population wears.[2] It is often used in a derogatory manner to describe high school and college students who keep up with trends and therefore dress all in a similar manner, making them look like mass-produced in a factory.[3][4] There's also the term Ryousangata Wota (量産型ヲタ), which specifically refers to female idol otaku who dress in a similar manner during events and live concerts.[2][5]
Ryousangata in its current meaning seems to have originated in fashion magazines during the early 2010s, prior it was mainly used in reference to actual mass-produced goods.[6] With the release of the Japanese tv drama "Ryosangata Riko" in 2022, the meaning has shifted to describe anyone who looks "generic" instead of someone following current trends.[7]
