Retro American Gyaru, also referred to incorrectly as Bohemian Gyaru in the international community[1], is a microstyle of gyaru fashion featuring traditional gyaru elements mixed with American bohemian fashion themes.[2] Although the style exists in images, and was featured prominently in Liz Liza 2010s magazine spreads, the style was never formally named, or made into a subgroup, and is instead a larger part of broader gyaru fashion trends.

This style is also occasionally referred to as "saike" gyaru, meaning "psychedelics", in international circles, a title that has also been used within Japan to describe a futuristic style of gyaru. However, this title seems to have no evidence of being actually used in Japan.

Style Basics[]

Bohemian gyaru is considered a "one-off" fashion by most gyaru, and never saw much success in the mainstream. However, the style is still occasionally seen.

This style keeps traditional gyaru hair and makeup, but adds American bohemian fashion influences, hence the Liz Liza name. Due to this, the stereotypical gyaru heels are replaced with sandals and flats or cowboy boots, while bright gyaru colors are replaced with more natural and earthy tones. Stereotypical bohemian headbands and loud prints are popular within the style.[3] Denim is also used, and sometimes other "classic American" influences like gingham and cowboy hats.

Magazines[]

Although no magazines catered to this style, occasionally street snaps and images of the style would pop up across magazines catering to Gyaru fashion. One specific example is EGG.[4] Liz Lisa also included several 2010 spreads catering to the style.
