Mannish style is a masculine focused fashion most often worn by women. It features masculine items and oversized items, and is meant to accentuate femininity with masculine clothing.
Mannish style is often confused with Boyish fashion.
The Name[]
Mannish (マニッシュ) is a term often used in fashion magazines to describe a "masculine" style, specifically when it comes to masculine fashion pieces that are traditionally associated with masculinity and "gentlemen". The style is sometimes also referred to as simply Masculine (マスキュリン).[1]
Style Basics[]
Mannish style is a delicate balance of masculine clothing items and a feminine shape. There are no hard and fast rules for the style, but there are a number of similar themes consistent amongst outfits.
Clothing[]
Common themes in mannish fashion are wearing masculine items to accentuate feminine beauty. [1][2] The style also seeks to have a "borrowed" feel, almost as if the wearer has borrowed items from a male partner's wardrobe. This includes using very oversized items. [3] The style uses more "fancy" items compared to other "boys" styles, such as Boyish, and is not sportish. [1][4]
Common clothing items in the style include tailored jackets, wide slack pants, oversized dress shirts, trenchcoats or Chester coats, and knit vests. [1][3] Logo t-shirts are also sometimes used. [2]
Clothing is most commonly in monochrome colors, and not much color is used. If bright colors are used, it is used sparingly as an accent color.[1]
Accessories[]
Accessories and jewelry are minimal in mannish style, but some accessories are sometimes used. Things like leather bags that evoke a "business" feel as well as glasses are sometimes worn. [3]
For shoes, loafers, lace up leather shoes, and shoes with rounded tips are most often worn.
Hair and Makeup[]
Hairstyles in mannish style are varied, but short hairstyles are most commonly seen. Additionally, makeup is kept and mainly natural. [3]

Although no brands are required to wear mannish style, there are a few brands that fit the style.[5][2]
