Kote Kei (コテ系), also known as Kote Kote Kei, is a label used to describe all classic styles of visual kei from early bands in the 1980s and 1990s.

Style Basics[]

There are no central defining aspects for kote kei, and definitions of what it consists of varies. However, the one consistent factor is that it is defined by early 80s and 90s styles of Visual Kei.

For fashion, the term can describe the early style of many band that are considered "classic" in visual kei circles. However, some similarities include large hairstyles often in bright colors, black clothing, punk looks, and enamel pins and spikes.

Many of these classic styles are much more toned down than usual visual kei styles. Others more closely resemble 80s glam rock, and others still, punk styles. [1][2][3][4]
