Cyber, not to be confused with western Cybergoth, is a Japanese retro-futuristic style that first emerged in Harajuku during the 90s.[1] The style was often seen in KERA during its height in the 1990s.[2] Nowadays in Japan, there are still new brands emerging that inject new life into the style.
The Name[]
Cyber (サイバー) refers to a wide range of all things futuristic in the Japanese language.
Style Basics[]
One of the main characteristics of Cyber fashion is that it uses materials that don't look natural and have an artificial appearance such as glossy vinyl, velour, or faux fur. Most commonly, baggy tops or jackets are worn in combination with flared-out pants.
Accessories often have fluorescent or glowing details and often resemble mechanical parts made from plastic. In the modern version, there's also many references to gaming culture with many stylish headphones being worn either as hair accessory or around the neck.
The hair can be of any cut or color, but colorful streaks and sections are popular to archive an artificial contrast to the natural base color. Makeup can be anything from simple to creative with various pop impressions and shapes resembling circuit boards.
