Bittersweet Lolita is a microstyle of lolita fashion that includes black colorways with the regular sweet style.

Style Basics[]

The bittersweet style has a focus on mixing dark and pastel coloways. This can be archived in various ways, the most common being to wear a black dress with pastel print details. In general, due to the popularity of sweet lolita, this is the easiest method of archiving the bittersweet look. Black JSKs are often paired with pastel blouses that match the color of the print, so are accessories.

Is It Actually a Style?[]

The style is considered unofficial, and more of a label, because it is otherwise identical to mainstream lolita fashion. Some say this means it need not be called a separate style, and even some argue the term is unnecessary completely. [1]

However, the bittersweet substyle has changed a lot since the term was created, and while some, or even most, bittersweet coords are made using the black colorways of sweet prints, the name has taken on a bigger meaning than these colorways alone. There have been many prints that no matter what the colorway, are considered to be bittersweet.
